Special Visitors yesterday and today

Yesterday we had a special visit from Dr. Lee, Isabel’s dad. He talked to us about his job in our community as a dentist. We learned about sugar bugs and the importance of brushing and flossing our teeth.

Today we had another special visitor. Mrs. Loeppky’s daughter Kailey came to tell us about her job as a lifeguard. We learned about being safe at the pool and we learned about the many responsibilities the lifeguards have.

I am looking for help in the following areas:

one parent to bake (or buy) 22 gingerbread man cookies – undecorated

2 cans of white icing

an assortment of small candies to use as decorations

If you can supply some of the above mentioned items for our gingerbread party, please let me know as soon as possible.

Thank you so much for all of your help!

Change to Christmas Concert Date

Good morning parents!

As you may have read on the December Highroad Newsletter that was mailed out this morning, there has been a change to our Christmas concert date and time, as well as a change to our last day before Christmas break.  Our preschool – grade 3 Christmas concert will now be on Thursday, December 21 at 1 pm, and dismissal for Christmas break will be immediately following that.  There will be no school on Friday, December 22.

Please make note of that!

Phonogram Update!

We did it!  We have been introduced to all of the single letter phonograms now!  Today the students were so excited to try to spell some words.  As we journey through kindergarten together I just wanted to make sure that you know what I am looking for in this regard.  Our focus is on hearing the sounds in words.  When students try to spell a word, and I can read it because they have identified a number of the sounds we celebrate that “they got all the sounds!”  I don’t focus on right or wrong.  There are so many spelling rules that the students will learn as they progress in school.  In Kindergarten we celebrate hearing the sounds in words and knowing which phonograms to print.  Today the students wanted to print the words lip, little, mitten and sandwich! We got a lot of the sounds and had a quick introduction to the “ch” phonogram.  We will continue to practice at school and your continued support at home will help solidify what they have been learning.  Try spelling some words together.  It’s really fun!

Remembrance Day and More!

I just realized I didn’t post these!  My apologies!  Here are some photos of us on Remembrance Day, Crazy Hat Day, and on Monday when we had a special visitor come from our community to teach us about her job- Blythe’s mom works at Starbucks!  She taught us about making coffee and brought us some cookies to sample.  (Don’t worry parents, the coffee was only sampled by me and Mrs. Loeppky!)  We are also celebrating the grand opening of our 2 new portables.  One of the portables is home to Ms. Froyland’s grade 6 class, and the other is the home to our new library!

Ribbon cutting ceremony and prayer for our new portables.

Blythe’s mom came to teach us about making coffee!

Crazy Hat day!

Ready to go with our poppies for the Remembrance Day Ceremony.

Our Busy Short Day!

What a busy short day we had today in kindergarten!  We started our day by joining the grades 1-3 students in their chapel service to hear about the Highroad students and staff who will be going to Guatemala during Spring Break on a missions trip.  Our class will be sponsoring one of these students and we will be joining together with them to collect items for the team to take as well as lifting them up in prayer.  Stay tuned to hear who our student is, and how we can help!

After recess we had a special visitor!  Corporal Ristau came to visit us and teach us about his job in the community- he is a police officer who works with police dogs!  It was so exciting!  We got to try out his handcuffs, try on his vest and go in his police truck.  Gibson, his police dog, showed us a lot of his skills and we got to see the lights flash.  Thanks Corporal Ristau for coming to visit us today and bringing Gibson with you!

Zones of Regulation

Hi Everyone!

Yesterday I sent home a paper explaining the Zones of Regulation.  As a K-3 staff we are implementing this curriculum in an effort to give our students more tools to help them self- regulate, and problem solve.  If you have any questions, I would be more than happy to try to answer them for you.  There is also a lot of information available online if you google Zones of Regulation.
