Polar Bear Inquiry Update

Yesterday we continued our quest to help the polar bears.  We started by investigating the polar bear’s habitat and, after much discussion and research (we looked in some books and at a globe), discovered that polar bears live in the Arctic and that that is at the top of the globe!  We also learned that polar bears live where there is ice, snow, water and the temperature is cold.  We learned about some animals that also live in the Arctic.  We have a lot more to learn in order to help the polar bears, but we are off to a great start!

PS  Did you know that penguins do not live in the Arctic?  They live in the Antarctic!

A trip to the Arctic, anyone?!

Oh wow!  Did we have some excited some kindergarten students today!  A mysterious envelope arrived in our classroom, still feeling cold from it’s journey.

We opened the envelope and found a letter from a scientist.  He was asking if we could help solve a problem.  He included a letter and a photograph for us to look at.  We discovered that the letter was from a polar bear named Nanuk, and her two cubs.  Nanuk told us that things were changing where she lived and that she and her cubs were very hungry as they were running out of food.

This is the beginning of our Polar Bear inquiry.  We have a lot of research to do!  Today we discussed what we know already and made a list of questions as well as some guesses about what is happening.  Tomorrow we will continue to collect information and see what we can learn.

PS  There will be NO FIELD TRIP TO THE ARCTIC (it’s just not in the budget this year, sorry!)  We will have to think of some other ways to help the polar bears!

Next Week

Happy snowy, slushy weekend!  I hope you were all able to stay safe and warm through the snow and freezing rain.  Because of our snow day on Friday, Cozy Casual Day is being switched to Monday!  This means your child doesn’t have to wear his/her uniform on Monday, but can wear comfy casual clothes instead.  This will NOT be a half day.  Please continue to ensure your child is dressed for the weather.

Reminders for next week:

Monday, January 15- cozy casual day, regular dismissal time

Wednesday, January 17- Wayland Sports field trip- play clothes.  I am still missing a couple of permission forms.  Please ensure I get these so that your child can join us!

Friday, January 19- half day- dismissal at 12:15.  Scholastic Book Orders are due.

Monday, January 22- PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT DAY- No school for students

New From Scholastic- online ordering!

Hi everyone!

I am so excited that Scholastic is now offering online ordering for parents.  This means that you don’t have to worry about sending in your paper order form.  You can browse selections online and easily select what your child will love and benefit from.

Curious about how this might work?  Follow the link below:

http://www.scholastic.ca/clubs/readingclubonline/parents/

Let me know how it works for you!  Because it’s new, I don’t have any experience with it yet and no one has tried it!  I would appreciate your feedback.

You can still send in your order the “Regular” way if you prefer.

Welcome Back!

Happy New Year everyone and welcome back!  I trust you all have had a restful Christmas break.  We are back into the swing of things and I just wanted to take a minute to remind you of a few things and make you aware of some new things as well.

Wayland Sports- next Wednesday, January 17, we are heading back to Wayland Sports.  A permission form is coming home today for that.  Please fill it out and return it as soon as possible.

Pillows and gym shoes- if you haven’t already sent your child’s pillow and gym shoes back to class, please do so as soon as you can.

Outside- Please dress your child appropriately for playing outside at recess and lunch time.  A number of students came today with no boots which makes it virtually impossible for them to play on the bark mulch as it is covered with slush and snow.  Please send your child with some boots to wear when the weather is like this.  In addition, girls are telling me their bare legs are cold.  If your daughter is wearing her dress perhaps you could consider sending her with some uniform appropriate tights?

Friday- this Friday, January 12 there will be dismissal at 12:15.  It will also be a casual dress day.  This is the reward for meeting our points goal for the Salvation Army Food Drive.

Family Friday- Family Friday will continue!  Please plan on joining us on Friday mornings for a time of reading.
