Kindie Korner Adventures

Curriculum Update!

We have been working so hard in Kindergarten!  Here is a little recap of what we have been focusing on in the past few weeks:

Math

We have begun working on addition story problems and have started looking at number bonds and decomposing numbers.  We have also been doing some graphing!

Language Arts

We have been introduced to all of the single letter phonograms now, and have begun to learn some double letter phonograms including ee, ck, ch, th, sh, er, ar.

In Writer’s Workshop we have progressed from just drawing and labeling the initial sounds of our pictures, to adding additional sounds and some of us are working on adding words, with spaces between them.  Speech bubbles and exclamation marks have also been introduced.

Zones of Regulation

We have learned about all of the zones and have talked about things that happen to us that are triggers for us that can send us from the yellow zone to the red zone.  We have also been reading a book called The Adventures of Stretch More by Trina Epstein and Ross W. Greene.

The Adventures of Stretch More: Pick-Your-Path Stories for Solving Problems Together by Trina Epstein In this book we follow the adventures of a boy named Stretch who is working on becoming “unstuck” and being more flexible.  I have seen great progress in the children’s abilities to work through their problems and responses as a result of this book!

Science

We have been learning about force and motion!  We have experimented with different surfaces and looked at friction and how it slows things down.  We have made ramps and tested them to see which ones make cars go faster, and we have made marble art.  It’s been a lot of fun!

First Nations Day

On April 10th, we will be having a First Nations Day. As a department K-3, we will be dividing the students into groups and running centres all day long. As part of our cultural experience, a local First Nations Food Truck has agreed to come and make fresh bannock for us. The students K-3 will pre – order their bannock and order slips were sent home last week. Students grades 6-12 can bring $4 and order directly from the truck during their lunch hour. Order forms are due at the office by Friday, March 16th. It’s going to be so much fun!

Parent Volunteers Needed!

Hi Parents!

I am looking for some parents to help us with our Home Reading Program!  This will begin after spring break and I am looking for some parents who have some time on Thursday mornings from 9 am until 10:15 to help make this program possible.  Duties would include recording who has returned their books, filing books, and selecting new books for students to take home, and listening to students read.  If this is of interest to you, and you are able to commit to coming in on Thursday mornings, please let me know.  If I get more than one parent interested you could alternate weeks, and if I get more than 2 interested, we could create a rotational schedule.

Let me know if you have any questions about this.  Thanks for considering it!
