Christmas traditions— anyone?

Hi everyone,

I have had no parents volunteer to come in and tell us about Christmas traditions from another country that are meaningful to them.   I would love to make meaningful connections with family traditions that are already in existence, rather than choosing countries and traditions at random.  If you have a connection to another country and would be willing to come in and talk for a few minutes, we would love to have you!  If not, I will choose some countries and traditions on my own.  If you could let me know as soon as possible, I would appreciate it.

Thanks!

Garage Sale Information

Come one, come all!  On Tuesday, December 4 the primary department is hosting a garage sale in the chapel.  The sale will be open before school, beginning at 8:30 until the bell rings, and after school until 3:30.  Parents are invited to shop during those times, and students will be visiting the sale during the school day with their classes. The majority of items will range in price from .25 to $2 with a few bigger pieces being priced higher.  Please send children with a bit of money to shop, if you wish, and with a plastic grocery bag labelled with their name, for their purchases to go in.  This could be a great opportunity for your child to buy a little Christmas gift for a sibling!

We are also still collecting toys and games- please feel free to drop off any toys your children are done with outside our classroom!

Paper Chain Advent Calendar

The children are coming home with a paper chain advent calendar that they made with their grade 6 buddies today.  There should be 24 links on their chain if the children counted correctly.  Please start cutting the links off on SATURDAY, not today!  If you start today, you will have to celebrate Christmas early!  🙂

Food Drive is Now ON!

Our Food Drive for the Salvation Army is now on!

We are looking for the following items (no noodle soup packets please)

mac and cheese (5 points per box)

chunky soup

canned lunches (ravioli, chili, pork and beans etc)

canned soup

canned fruit

dry pasta

The above items are each worth 5 points.  All other items will be worth 1 point.  If we bring in enough food and collect enough points we will earn a casual day complete with hot chocolate and cookies!)

Please consider sending some food in so we can bless the Salvation Army this Christmas season.

PS  We also talked about our toy drive and I heard a lot of the students exclaiming that they had something they could bring in.  It would be great if we could increase the number of toys collected so that we can bless the Ann Davis Transition House this winter as well!

From Community to Christmas- how you can help us learn in kindie!

I can’t believe we only have nine more school days this month!  We are wrapping up our unit on Community and will begin to focus on Christmas with the arrival of December.

Something that often surprises us, is that Christmas is celebrated differently in different communities.  During our last 2 weeks of school before Christmas holidays we will be learning about Christmas Around the World!  I am hoping you can help us!

Does your family have connections to traditions from another culture, country or heritage?  Would you be willing to come in and help us learn about that?  If you have a connection to a Christmas tradition from another country, I would love to work with you to help our students expand their view of the world.  Please let me know as soon as you can if you think you might be willing to share with us.  This can be as simple as you showing a youtube video about the country where you are from, and coloring a picture, or as elaborate as doing a craft.  It is my hope to focus on countries that are meaningful to the children and the families they represent.

My husband’s family is Swedish and we always incorporate Swedish traditions in our Christmas festivities.  I am excited to share these with the students this year, and would love to learn about your traditions as well.  Let me know if you can help!
