Gingerbread Week!

We are going to kick off the month of December with a week all about the Gingerbread Man!  We will be reading a number of different versions of the story, doing gingerbread math, science and more!  On Friday December 6 we would love to finish our week off by decorating some gingerbread men.  Would you be willing to help us? We will need:

one parent to bake (or buy) 22 gingerbread man cookies – undecorated

2 cans of white icing

an assortment of small candies to use as decorations

If you can supply some of the above mentioned items for our gingerbread party, please let me know as soon as possible.

Thank you so much for all of your help!

Food Drive Begins!

Every Christmas season we have a food drive to help fill the Salvation Army’s shelves.  This year each class is getting a ‘top item’ to collect for the food bank. Our class is collecting boxes of Macaroni & Cheese.  Each box that comes in is worth 5 points.  Any other item for the food that comes in will  be worth one point.  If our school can collect 20,000 points then we will have a comfy clothing day after Christmas.  The class that brings in the top points will also get a prize.  Help us fill the food bank!  Items can begin coming in as early as today!

From Communities to Christmas- how you can help us in Kindie!

I can’t believe we only have 6 more school days this month!  We are wrapping up our unit on Community and will begin to focus on Christmas with the arrival of December.

Something that often surprises us, is that Christmas is celebrated differently in different communities.  During our last 2 weeks of school before Christmas holidays we will be learning about Christmas Around the World!  I am hoping you can help us!

Does your family have connections to traditions from another culture, country or heritage?  Would you be willing to come in and help us learn about that?  If you have a connection to a Christmas tradition from another country, I would love to work with you to help our students expand their view of the world.  Please let me know as soon as you can if you think you might be willing to share with us.  This can be as simple as you showing a youtube video about the country where you are from, and coloring a picture, or as elaborate as doing a craft.  It is my hope to focus on countries that are meaningful to the children and the families they represent.

My husband’s family is Swedish and we always incorporate Swedish traditions in our Christmas festivities.  I am excited to share these with the students this year, and would love to learn about your traditions as well.  Let me know if you can help!

Social Studies Update

This month we have been focusing on our community.  We have been learning about our classroom community, school community, and city.  Yesterday we spent a lot of time exploring google maps and our place in this world.  The students couldn’t get enough of it!  They are in awe of how big our country is!

Phonogram Update!

Today after I taught the students one more new phonogram, I counted how many single letter phonograms we had left to learn.  They unanimously begged me to show them all of the rest of them, and so, we have now been introduced to ALL of the single letter phonograms.  We will continue to practice all of their sounds and formations until Christmas and we will also continue using these phonograms as we begin to learn to read and write.

Lockdown Drill Today

We had a lockdown drill today.  This can always be a little scary but we practiced before the practice and the students did so well.  In Kindergarten we focused on the story from a couple of years ago when a water buffalo wandered into the parking lot at Langley Christian School.  A friend of mine teaches there and she said they had to go into lockdown.  This seems so silly to the children almost, and far less scary than thinking that bad people might be here.  The students had their ACTUAL lockdown drill in library and I have heard they did so well!  You may want to ask them about it when they get home today.

Spoons!

Unfortunately my supply of extra spoons is essentially used up already.  Please be sure to pack spoons for your children if they are going to need one.  I can’t guarantee that I will have one for them if they need one.

Also, if you happen to have some extra plastic spoons laying around the house and you would be willing to donate them to our classroom, that would be very much appreciated!

Memory Verse -due November 25

Thank you to those of you who have been working with your children on their Bible Memory Verse this past week.  We noticed a significant improvement in the number of students who could recite their verse.

Daily practice, for as little as 5 minutes a day can make all the difference.

Our next verse is:

Commit to the Lord whatever you do,
and he will establish your plans.

Proverbs 16:3

Zones of Regulation Information

Hi Parents!

Here is some great information about the Zones of Regulation program we are using at school.  Your child may be coming home talking about colors and zones and you might like to be able to participate in conversation with them about it. Take a look if you are interested!
