IMPORTANT! Freshgrade Student Access Codes Sent

Hi Parents!  It was so nice to talk with most of you yesterday.  I miss you all so much.  I have spent time this morning emailing each of you the access code you will need for your child’s FRESHGRADE STUDENT folder.  It is very important that you download the Freshgrade Student app or access it online (by searching freshgrade classic, selecting Freshgrade Student) and then enter the access code I sent you.

If you could please take a moment to comment in your child’s freshgrade folder and let me know that you have accessed it, that would be fantastic.  I will be posting an easy little activity there in the next day or 2 so you can try uploading a response.

Please let me know if you have any questions!  We are in this together!

A Message from Highroad Academy

Dear Parents and students,

Welcome back. Usually, at this time, we would be welcoming you back into our classroom with sunny smiles, laughter and fun tales of holiday exploits filling the air. However, these are not usual times. Recent events have created lots of uncertainty and unknowns in our world.

One thing we do know is that God is great and powerful. He is someone who is always faithful. Even during this time, where plans seem uncertain and ever changing, we know He has a plan for us.

We have drawn a lot on our faith in God these past few days as we have begun to plan for what your child’s education will look like in the coming days and weeks ahead. Hopefully, this post will begin to provide you with some information on some of the things we are working on, providing you with some comfort and clarity.

We want you to know that:

  1. School will continue – Teachers are hard at work preparing materials and activities to students to work on at home. Recognizing that there are many things vying for your attention on the homefront, we are trying hard to not overwhelm you. However, we do not want to just send home busy work but rather activities that are still strongly connected with the BC curriculum.
  2. Establishing a routine is important – One of the best things for your child is establishing a routine that you can follow as much as possible. Therefore, a suggested daily schedule will be sent home to help with building those all important routines into your day. Children like knowing what is going to happen each day and what the expectations are.
  3. Connections with your child are important to us – We are thinking and praying for our students. We miss their smiles, their unique personalities and their energy. We have built relationships with your child during this year and want those relationships to continue even at this time. We want your child to know that we are still here thinking of them and knowing that they are still important to us. Throughout the week, we will be contacting you and your child – on a scheduled basis – using a variety of methods (phone, email, and video conferencing).
  4. Technology can be a powerful tool for remote learning but may be difficult – Bringing a number of technology tools to work in delivering content, activities and materials to your child can make for a different kind of dynamic learning experience. However, we recognize that families have differing abilities in accessing technology at home. Over the next few days, you will be contacted and asked to complete a short survey which will help us to determine the needs and capabilities of families in accessing technology. At the Intermediate level, there are plans to send our Chromebooks home with each student so that they have equal access to a tool commonly used at school.
  5. Students may need items from school – Elementary students use a wide variety of tools to complete work. In order to facilitate learning at home, some of these items will need to be returned to you. The Office and Admin are developing plans to provide families time to collect supplies from classrooms. This will allow you to have access to some common materials including pencil crayons, markers, scissors, rulers, paper, some duotangs, etc. Cognizant of the virulent nature of the Covid-19 virus, we are working on a way for parents to pick these materials up while maintaining the social distancing guidelines put out by Public Health. A schedule will be released by the office of pick-up times for your child.
  6. Primary content and activities will be distributed through your child’s classroom blog. Intermediate students will continue to use Google Classroom to get their materials, activities and content.
  7. There are many things we don’t know yet – We are working hard to answer as many questions as possible as quickly as possible and will strive to keep you updated as soon as we know more information.

We want to thank you for your patience during this time. God proclaims,

Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you,  I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

You and your family are in our thoughts and prayers. We look forward to continuing to work closely with you, even in the face of these challenges.

Welcome back and Hello to Distance Learning!

Well, I am sure your spring break, like mine, didn’t go quite as planned.  I trust and pray you are all safe and healthy though, and that you are able to find joy in the days at home with your families.

This next part of our school year will be like none that I have ever experienced and I am sure you and I are sharing similar feelings about how this will all play out.  Please know that the admin and staff have all been working already on how things will go and there is a lot to still work out.  A lot of this new teaching and learning will involve different technology that I may or may not have ever had to use before!  One of those new technologies is uploading videos!  I am testing out this new technology by sending you a cute little video of my girls and our dog in the backyard during our spring break “staycation.”  I sure hope it works!

I will have more information to send in the coming days and will do my best to make sure that things don’t feel overwhelming for any of us.  Please know I am here to work with you as best I can as we embark on this new learning journey together.

Sending You All Love

Hi Families,

As Spring Break has wrapped up and a new world of distance learning is upon us, I came across this sweet story about social distancing and thought I would share it with you.  I have been flip flopping between enjoying my time at home and feeling desperate to escape my four walls.  I am sure our kids feel the same way sometimes.  This sweet story may help your child come to terms with the what’s going on.

I will be sending more official information home next week about how we go forward from here.  I am putting things together that I hope will be helpful for you and not overwhelming in any way.  If there is anything I can do to help you out, I am here for you!

Blessings to you and your families.  Stay healthy, safe and continue to trust in Him.

Grandparent’s Day

Hi everyone,

Grandparent’s Day is coming up on April 15!  Invitations were sent home today for this K-3 event.  If your child needs more than one invitation, please let me know and I can send home additional invites in the next little while for you.

We understand that some children have grandparents who live far away and will not be able to attend.  We would love to see EVERY student have a special someone here on Grandparent’s Day.  If your child’s grandparents live too far away to make it, or there are other extenuating circumstances, please consider inviting a different adult to come instead.  If there is no one who can make it that day to visit your child, please let me know in advance so I can do my best to make sure your child feels included and loved that day.

Memory Verse due March 13!

Wow were we ever successful at saying our memory verse this week!  It is amazing what music can do!  Here is our next verse

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z2c4XkbPtEE

John 3:16

Please practice at home!  Only the words from the verse will be focused on but if your child wants to learn the whole song, that’s great too!

Push or Pull?

We are starting a new science unit about force and motion!  On Wednesday I would like each student to bring something from home that can be pushed or pulled, and can move (without batteries or electricity!)  Please help your child find something and be sure to send it to school on Wednesday.

Thanks!
