Kindie Korner Adventures

Snow Days and Getting Dressed

Hi everyone!

As you preparing your littles to head out to play in the snow, could you help me with something?  At school I am noticing that a number of my kindie friends put their gloves or mittens on FIRST, and this makes every other item of clothing to put on so much more difficult.

Could you encourage them to use the following checklist:

snow pants

boots

jacket (zipped up)

toque

mittens

Thank you!

Advent Bells

The children made advent bells with their grade 6 buddies today.  These are to start on Dec 1.  If the children start cutting links off tonight, they will run out before Christmas.

Weather

The weather has become very cold, and some of us, even with jackets, toques and mittens are finding ourselves quite cold outside.  We are definitely in Winter Jacket season and not just sweater season anymore.  Please send your child with what they will need to stay warm.

Thank you!

Christmas Traditions from Around the World

As we wrap up our unit on Families and transition to Christmas, one of the most fun things we do is talk about Christmas around the world.  Does your family celebrate in some way that stems from a different country?  We would love to learn about it!  Perhaps you would like to come and share what traditions your family has that find their origins in other countries, or perhaps you aren’t able to come in but have some ideas to share with us, I would love to hear from you.

Could you please let me know if you have Christmas traditions from other countries, what they are, what country they originate from and if you would like to come in to tell us about them?  We like to learn about Christmas around the world, but I like to incorporate the family traditions of the students in my classroom if possible.

November 25- Pro D Day (no school for students)

Missions Fundraiser:

Mark your calendars for December 8th – the whole school will be participating in a “Pay to Wear Casual” day.  All students may wear casual clothing per the uniform policy guidelines.  Money can be handed in at the office or to the teachers.

For the Elementary Department (K-6) there are donuts and cookies available to order on Munch-A-Lunch.  Please note that these need to be ordered by December 2nd and there will not be any available on the day to purchase.  Email the office if you need help with Munch-A-Lunch.

Salvation Army Food Drive:

The food drive will start December 1st, note that cash donations are preferred as they can buy things at a discount price thus making the donation go farther.  More information will come closer to December.

Christmas Sweaters Day:

On Wednesday, December 14th all students (K-12) are welcome to wear Christmas-themed clothing.  Any student not wishing to participate can wear their regular uniform.

Christmas Concerts:

The students have begun working on preparing for the Christmas concerts.

Grade 4-12 Concert: Thursday, December 15th at 6:30pm

Grade K-3 Concert: Friday, December 16th at 10:30am

Note: All classes will be dismissed early on Friday, December 16th at 11:30am (after the concert).

Apps and Resources

It was so wonderful to get the chance to connect with you yesterday and discuss your child’s learning, successes and challenges.  One of the topics that came up often was phonograms.  I mentioned to some of you that I would blog some apps that might be helpful for you and so here is that information.  If you are looking for a way to support your child’s phonogram learning and don’t have the Phonogram cards at home, or would like something that your child can do more independently, this might be what you are looking for!

Please know that at this point we have been introduced to all of the single letter phonograms so if you are wondering which ones your child should practice, now you know!

If you are looking for something to help your child with their letter formation another good app option is Little Writer

My Mouth is a Volcano

We have been reading the book by Julia Cook called “My Mouth is a Volcano.”  This book addresses the issue of interrupting and has been quite useful this year in our classroom.  I have attached a video link to the story below if you would like to take a look.
